Yash Chopra was born on September 27, 1932, in Lahore, now in Pakistan. The celebrated filmmaker from Bollywood known mostly for his romantic films would have turned 84 today. He began his career as an assistant director to his filmmaker elder brother B R Chopra, and over the years built his own reputation as a director. A young Yash Chopra was sent to Bombay to book a ticket to London to pursue higher studies in engineering. He had Rs 200 in his pocket, given by his mom along with her blessings, when he left the city of Jalandhar in Punjab, India for Mumbai. Eventually, Yash Chopra stayed back and joined his brother B R Chopra in making films. Through his directions and productions, Yash Chopra has been credited with moulding the careers of many Bollywood superstars like Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, Jaya Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Sridevi, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Rani Mukerji, Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Juhi Chawla, Anil Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Preity Zinta, and many more. His studio Yash Raj Films is the most respected film company in India today, helmed by his elder son Aditya Chopra who is also a director.

As a tribute to the director on his 84th birth anniversary, to help you understand his struggle as well as his good luck before he went on to become a famous filmmaker, we share a very special archive video from 2012 – Shah Rukh Khan in conversation with Yash Chopra. This video was streamed live on Yash Raj Films’ YouTube on September 27, 2012, and received record number of views. It was not just for Yash Chopra’s 80th birthday, but also as a promotional event for his directorial Jab Tak Hai Jaan that was scheduled to release on November 13 that year. Almost a month after this live video event was held, Yash Chopra passed away on October 21, 2012, of dengue. His last film remains the Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma starrer Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Shah Rukh Khan brings out the story of Yash Chopra beautifully, from when he was assistant director to stars like Dilip Kumar, Vyajayanthimala, Meena Kumari to his first break as director.
