Zohra Sehgal

Legendary actress Zohra Sehgal passed away at the age of 102 in New Delhi on Thursday. She was unwell for past few days and suffered a cardiac arrest this evening, family sources said. Zohra Sehgaal was given the title of Laadli of the century by United Nations Population Fund (UNPF)-Laadli Media Awards in New Delhi in 2008.

Zohra Sehgal was known for her role in movies like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1995), Veer-Zaara (2004), Chalo Ishq Ladaaye (2002), Cheeni Kum (2007) and last appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya (2007).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi  condoled the death of the cinema and theatre veteran, calling her “prolific and full of life”.

“Prolific & full of life, Zohra Sehgal made a mark through her acting, which is admired across generations. Saddened on her demise,” Modi tweeted.

The grand old lady of Indian cinema not only made a mark on the desi soil but also worked in English movies like Bend It Like Beckham (2002) and Mistress of Spices (2005).

The always loving warm smile flashed by Zohra Sehgal will forever remain in memory. Zohra Sehgal was not only a fine actress but also a great dancer.She joined the troupe of Uday Shankar in 1935, where she performed in countries like Japan, Europe, Egypt and United States.

She was recipient of several awards including the Padma Vidhushan (2010).
