A year has passed since Manchester United legend, Alex Ferguson left the club: A look at the major changes that took place
Most Manchester United fans will remember this date as the gutted feeling day where they were given the shock of, possibly their whole life.
Most Manchester United fans will remember this date as the gutted feeling day where they were given the shock of, possibly their whole life. Sir Alex Ferguson retired this day (last year) after serving for 27 years at the club and winning 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League and two UEFA Champions League titles. His time at the club has led to Ferguson being regarded as one of the most successful, admired and respected managers in the history of the game. The Guardian had announced that it was the “end of an era.”
A look at the changes (for good or for bad) that took place since the remarkable manager retired:-
David Moyes
The one question that haunted most football fans was that who will be given the responsibility to carry on the patrimony of managing the Manchester United club. It was finally announced on July, 2013 that the Scottish Manager and former player, David William Moyes would be appointed as Ferguson’s successor. He began his post as Manchester United manager on 1 July 2013, on a six-year contract. He seemed all set since he also brought in his own coaching staff while ignoring Ferguson’s advice. Everyone had high hopes in Moyes that he would be able to retain what Fergie left off. However, he was sacked after 10 months due to poor results during his managership.
Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini
In September, 2013, United made it official that they had signed on the Belgian midfielder, Marouane Fellaini in a joint bid of £27.5m. It was later reported in January 2014 that Chelsea player, Juan Mata had signed for United. Mata, 25, had 32 caps for the Spanish national team and had played 135 times for Chelsea, scoring 32 goals since signing from Valencia in 2011. With such major signings coming through MUFC’s way, it seemed like things could still get better for the club. However, neither of those things happened. The duo was unable to perform its respective roles and the fans were highly disappointed.
United out of top 4
More pressure had been on the club after it got knocked off the top four places in the football club’s rich list. It was for the first time ever that MUFU had been out of the top three positions of the Premiere League. The slurs and criticisms thrown at the club had increased. Was this chaos here to stay?
Ryan Giggs took temporary charge
Following the departure of David Moyes as manager, Manchester United had announced that Ryan Giggs, the club’s most decorated player, will assume responsibility for the first team until a permanent appointment can be made.
