Atletico Madrid thrash AC Milan 4-1 to reach quarter-finals of Champions League after 17 years

Raul Garcia celebrates his goal against AC Milan.

Atletico Madrid inflicted more pain upon struggling Italian side AC Milan to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in 17 years. Diego Costa who scored the only goal at San Siro three weeks ago, was the hero again at the Vicente Calderon. The 4-1 win on the night took the aggregate score to a commanding 5-1 final finish.

Diego Costa opened the scoring only in only two minutes by drilling home Koke’s great cross through an acrobatic finish. AC Milan then were given hope when Kaka headed Andrea Poli’s cross close to half an hour. AC Milan felt they stood a chance but then fell flat after Turkish international Arda Turan restored the lead to make it 2-1 for the home side. (Check out the action in pics)

Raul Garcia made it worse for Clarence Seedorf’s side by heading the third goal for Atletico Madrid before Diego Costa again scored through a cool yet powerful finish to increase his tally to seven goals in this year’s Champions League campaign. Final score at Vicente Calderon was 4-1.

On a night that was epic in proportions for Atletico Madrid, the only downside was the yellow card that was awarded to Raul Garcia who is now set to miss the 1st leg of the quarter-final tie.
