In this edition of the Barclays Premier League 2014-15 Team Preview, we take a look at two teams which had a below-par season and fired their managers mid-season, Manchester United and Swansea City. While there won’t be much surprise for Swansea firing their manager, Manchester United doing so did grab a lot of attention.

United and Swansea will both want to improve on last season’s result and hopefully even better their results in the 2012-13 results with new managers in charge of their team.

Alex Ferguson had criticized Roman Abramovich for firing managers, arguing that managers need time to adapt and stamp their style on the side. He himself had chosen David Moyes to succeed him to manage the Red Devils. When Manchester United sacked him for poor results it grabbed everybody’s attention. Why wasn’t he given more time? Manchester United did look like hypocrites. Ryan Giggs succeeded him but it was too late then. United finished seventh and could not even qualify for the Europa League playoffs.

This season Ryan Giggs is back as assistant coach, except that he’s assistant to former Barcelona and Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal. van Gaal has made some changes to the team and is now ruling the team with an iron fist, true to his style of being a strict disciplinarian. In the transfer market, Manchester United have bought young left-back Luke Shaw from Southampton and Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao. Wayne Rooney has been made the captain of the squad with Darren Fletcher as his deputy.

With a new captain and coach Manchester United might just have the x-factor this season to make it big, something they lack for most part of last season.

Barclays Premier League 2014: Swansea City Team Profile

There’s no denying the fact that Michael Laudrup transformed Swansea during his time at the Welsh club but his performances at the first season was bad. When he did not sign a single player at the end of the winter transfer window he was fired for not doing his best to improve performances. His assistant Garry Monk was made the interim manager and is now the full time manager for the season.

The Swans missed their star striker Michu last season because of injury. Michu came into the limelight in the 2012-13 season after performing well on a consistent basis. This season he has been sent to Napoli on loan. In his absence it will be Wilfried Bony’s turn to come to the fore. Garry Monk will also hope that his team performs well, lest his fate will be the same as Laudrup.
