Bayern Munich dominated the whole game with possession but were given the occassional worry with Danny Welbeck’s pace. The striker missed a great opportunity to give Manchester United a lead in the first half as he was left in front of the goalkeeper but had his soft chip attempt parried away by Manuel Neuer.

The newly crowned German Bundesliga champions were forced to concede on 58 minutes when Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic rose to head Wayne Rooney’s corner. It was a beastly goal from the defender who went on to win the man of the match for his commanding performance in the game.

The lead lasted only eight minutes as Bayern’s midfielder Schweinsteiger pounced on a cushioned header by substitute Mario Mandzukic to neatly volley home his effort. David De Gea could do nothing about the effort as it was a quick play from the Bavarians.

The away goal gives Bayern Munich the advantage but Schweinsteiger was later sent off having recieved his second yellow for impeding Wayne Rooney at the edge of United’s box. Bayern’s goalscorer joins Javi Martinez to miss the second leg on April 9 at the Allianz Arena.
