Commonwealth Games 2014 Live Updates: Jitu Rai, Vikas Thakur, Gurpal Singh and Gagan Narang bag medal on Day 5
Trinidad & Tobago were thrashed by New Zealand 14-0 in the first group match earlier.
Glasgow: Day 5 at the Glasgow 2014 was a mixed bag for the Indian players. They added 4 medals to their tally of 22 won on the previous day, India also slipped to the 7th rankings in the medal table with 7 gold, 12 silver and 7 bronze. India’s lone gold came from Shooter Jitu Rai while 3 silver medals were bagged by shooters Gurpal Singh, Gagan Narang and weightlifter Vikas Thakur. India’s Om Parkash Singh Karhana finished sixth in the men’s shot put final of the 2014 Commonwealth Games at the Hampden Park Stadium here Monday. Om Parkash, who threw 18.98 metres in the qualification round, could only manage 18.73m in the finals. Jamaica’s O’Dayne Richards broke the Games record with a throw of 21.16 to take the gold. New Zealand’s Tom Walsh (21.19) took silver while Canadian Tim Nedow had to content with bronze. (IANS)
WEIGHTLIFTING
India’s Vikas Thakur won the 12th silver for India in the Commonwealth Games 2014. With the total points of 333, Vikas Thakur came second in the Men’s 85 kg played at Clyde Auditorium. New Zealand’s Richard Patterson won the gold medal with 335 points and Canada’s Pascal Plamondon took the bronze medal with 333 points. Vikas Thakur, who lifted 150kg in the snatch, then took the lead with 183kg and it looked like he might end up with gold medal when Patterson failed with his first attempt at 184kg but came back strongly to lift 185 kg.
BOXING
[1.15 am IST] Mandeep Jangra is taking on Kestna Davis from Jamaica in the Men’s Welter (69 kg) Round of 16 event. In the first round of India’s Jangra collected a perfect 30/30 as Davis got 27/30. The second game also sees a perfect round of bout from Haryana born Jangra as he collects another 30/30 score as the three judges give 27/30 to Davis. Mandeep Jangra takes the round of 16 match 3-0.
HOCKEY
The Indian women’s hockey team handed Trinidad & Tobago a similar scoreline just like Kiwis did in their first group match. Indian eves defeated a rather inexperience T&T side 14-0. Going into the half time with a magnificent 9-0 courtesy Rani Rampal and Deepika Thakur goals, it was Anupa Barla and Jaspreet Kaur who made merry in the second half.

Poovamma Machettria of India fails to qualify in Women’s 400m Semi-final. Poovamma, who started in lane 8, clocked a time of 52.88 seconds, much slower than her season best of 51.73 seconds. Instead, England’s Kelly Massey with a personal best time of 52.19 secs finished second behind Jamaica’s Stephanie McPherson, who topped semis 1 with a time of 50.69. (IANS)

Jazz Carlin won Wales’ first swimming gold at the Commonwealth Games, whilst there was more success for Australia and England on Monday. Carlin posted a new personal best and smashed the Commonwealth Games record in a time 8min 18:11sec to take the women’s 800m freestyle. The 23-year-old shaved over four seconds off the previous record she set in qualifying fastest for the final on Sunday. World 800m freestyle bronze medallist Lauren Boyle took silver for New Zealand, whilst Brittany MacLean claimed bronze for Canada. (AFP)

Indian women’s team made a mockery of inexperienced Trinidad & Tobago side with a score of 9-0 as they completed the half time. The main wrecker-in-chief has been Rani Rampal and Deepika Thakur. The two girls have taking their chances and giving India an unassailable lead.
India and Trinidad & Tobago face-off in Women’s Preliminary match. India were beaten by New Zealnad in their second group match at the Commonwealth Games 2014. India has earlier defeated Canada 4-2 while Trinidad & Tobago were thrashed by New Zealand 14-0 in the first group match.

In the group A of men’s hammer throw qualification round, 23-year-old Chandrodaya Narayan Singh qualified for the finas. He finished 5th as he covered a distance of 67.95. While Kamalpreet Singh placed in the Group B failed to qualify as he finished sixth with a distance of 65.25.
WEIGHTLIFTING
Marie Fegue won the women’s 69kg weightlifting category on Monday to hand Cameroon its first Commonwealth Games gold medal since 2002. “A hard year of work has paid off by winning the gold. That was my only goal,” said Fegue, after totalling 234kg from a 102kg snatch and 132kg in the clean and jerk. The last Cameroon gold was won by weightlifter Madeleine Yamechi at Manchester 2002, and Fegue’s was the African country’s 10th gold medal in Games history, all having been won in weightlifting. Nigerian Itohan Ebireguesele claimed silver with 222kg (100+122) to go one better than her bronze four years ago in New Delhi. Canada’s Marie-Josee Ares-Pilon won bronze this time around with a total of 214kg (99+115). (AFP)

In the 25 m Rapid Fire Pistol Men’s Qualification Stage 1, Harpreet Singh and Vijay Kumar finished first and fourth respectively. Harpreet Singh led the qualification points with 292 points as Vijay Kumar finished with 181 points.
In the 50m Rifle Prone Women’s Finals Meena Kumari and Lajja Gauswami finished with 6th and 11th position respectively. Meena scored 615.3 points and Gauswami score 612-3 points. Sally Johnston of New Zealand with 620.7 points took gold medal. Esmari van Reenen of South Africa with 620.1 points took silver medal. Jen Mcintosh of Scotland with 619.5 took bronze medal

Vijender Singh beats Namibia’s Mujandjae Kasuto in Men’s Middle (75kg) category Round of 16. Vijender Singh got perfect 30/30 points from the all the three judge while his Namibian opponent could only manage 27 out of 30 by all the three judges.

India’s 22-year-old Devendro Laishram beats Sri Lanka’s Madushan Gamage in the Men’s Light Fly (49 kg) Round of 16 but for the Indian player Shiva Thapa not a great time against Michael Conlan of Northren Ireland as he lost in the 49kg category Round of 16. Shiva scored 27/30 by Judge A, 27/30 by Judge B and 26/30 by Judge C. He also got one warning.As for Conlan scored 29/30, 29/30 an 30/30.

In the Men’s 50m Rifle Prone final event, India’s leading shooter Gagan Narang won the silver medal taking India’s tally to 25 medals. This is India’s 12 the medal in shooting events at the Glasgow 2014. Australia’s Warren Potent with a total score of 203.6. took gold medal and England’s Kenneth Parr with 182.0 points took bronze medal.
India has won 7 gold, 11 silver and 7 bronze in the Commonwealth Games 2014 so far and is third medal on Day 5. Earlier Shreyashi Singh and Seema Tomar failed to qualify in the Women’s trap event.
ATHLETICS
Indian para-discus thrower Jai Deep narrowly missed out on the bronze medal finishing fourth in the men’s F44/42 final of the Commonwealth Games here Monday. Jai Deep’s best throw of 38.68m came on his first attempt. However, the 24-year-old Rohtak-born could not improve on that on his next five attempts. His next best came on his fourth attempt when he threw the discus to a distance of 38.22m.
England’s paralympian Dan Greaves won the gold with a throw of 59.21 metres, Welsh Aled Davies came in second with 46.83m to take home silver while Nigerian Richard Okigbazi clinched the bronze with 39.38m. (IANS)

India’s Shreyashi Singh and Seema Tomar failed to qualify for the Women’s trap semi-finals. With the total points of 66 and 65, Singh and Tomar finished at 7th and 8th position respectively. The top three in the qualification were Australia’s C Skinner, Cyprus’ Konstantinidou and Northern Ireland’s K Barr.

India finds another disappointing end for the medal hope as 27-year-old Saurav Ghosal lost to England’s Peter Barker in the Men’s singles Bronze medal match. He lost in four games 11-5, 6-11, 11-5, 11-6 to Peter Barker.

Men’s team Bronze Medal Match: Match 4: Sharath Kamal Achanta is playing the reverse men’s singles match against Ojo Onaolapo lost the fourth match by 11-9,3-11, 11-7,11-5. Mixed Team Bronze Medal Match: Match 5: All coming down to the last and deciding fifth game of the Bronze medal match with all eyes on the experienced Indian pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa taking on Shinta Mulia Sari and Lei Yao from Singapore. Not a kind of start India would have expected from their seasoned campaigners as they lose first game 21-17. The duo lost the second game 29-27. GOLD and SILVER Medal: From the Indian circuit comes the great news as Jitu Rai and Gurpal Singh take the gold and silver medal in the 50m Pistol Men’s finals respectively. Jitu Rai finished with a total score of 194.1 points as his Indian compatriot Gurpal Singh bagged 187.2 points. With this India’s medal tally shoots up to 24 medals that include 7 gold, 10 silver and 7 bronze. India also escalates to 4th rank in the medal table.

Men’s team Bronze Medal Match: Match 3: The charismatic duo from India that pulled off a thrilling win over England in their match, HR Desai and Anthony Arputharaj take on Nigerian pair of Ojo Onaolapo and Segun Toriola. Desai/Anthony win the first game 11-3. The Nigerian pair make a dramatic comeback to take the second game and third game 11-9, 11-5 respectively. With a score tied at 9-9 in the fourth game, Desai and Anthony show some smart moves to take it 11-9. But they lose the fifth game 11-9. England’s Dan Greaves won the gold medal in Athletics Men’s Discus Throw. England continues to remain at the second position of the medal table with 24 gold, 17 silver and 17 bronze.

In the Trap Men’s Qualification, India’s Mansher Singh and Manavjit Sandhu qualified for men’s trap finals. At the Barry Buddon Shooting venue, Mansher Singh topped the qualification round with a total of 50 points. Manavjit Sandhu finished third with a total score of 49 points. Australia’s M Diamond finished second with 49 points.

Mixed Team Bronze Medal Match: Match 4: In the third match of the mixed team event, it is India’s top seeded player PV Sindhu taking on Xiaoyu Liang of Singapore in the Women’s singles match. Sindhu won the first game 24-22 against Liang in tough competition but has it all going for her in the second as she outrouts to take the second game 21-13. Mixed Team Bronze Medal Match: Match 2: In the second match India’s best men’s singles player Kashyap Parupalli takes on Chao Huang in the men’s singles match. Parupalli takes the first game 21-15 in 14 minutes. Indian player P Kashyap makes a great comeback in the second game to take it 22-20. With this he levels the the bronze medal match. In the 50m Pistol Men’s qualification event, India’s Jitu Rai not only qualified but also topped with 562 points, which is a Commonwealth Games record. His compatriot Gurpal Singh also qualifies with a total of 538 points and finished a decent 6th. The second place went to England’s Kristian Callaghan with 547 points and R Daniel from Trinidad and Tobago came third with 545 points. The main medal event of 50m Pistol Men’s Finals is scheduled at 4.45 pm IST.

Mixed Team Bronze Medal Match: Match 1: In the Match 1 of the mixed doubles, India’s RV Gurusaidutt and Ashwini Ponnappa take on Singapore’s Danny Chrisnanta and Vanessa Neo. India lost their semi-final match against England 3-0 and are playing for the bronze medal at Emirates Arena. The first game is won by Chrisnanta/Neo 21-19. Not a good start to their bronze medal match campaign. India concede many points in the second game and have lost it 21-19. It was a great start for the 21-year-old Sumit Sangwan at the Glasgow 2014. He registered a comfortable 3-0 victory over Mohammed Hakimu Fumu to reach the quarterfinals of the Men’s Light Heavy 81kg category. Earlier Manoj Kumar also booked quarterfinals spot of the the men’s 64kg category with a 2-0 win over Canada’s Arthur Biyarslanov. He next faces Samuel Maxwell.

Commonwealth Games 2014 Schedule of Day Five: July 28, 2014 Monday
Badminton: India in mixed team event semi-final were handed 0-3 defeat by England and will now face Singapore for the Bronze Medal. The match is scheduled to start at 1.30 pm IST at Emirates Venue. The Gold Medal match between Malaysia and England will take place at the same venue at 3.00 pm IST.
Table Tennis: Indian Men’s team lost their semi-final match against England will play Nigeria in the Bronze Medal match. The match is scheduled to start at 3.30 pm IST at Scotstoun Table Tennis venue followed by the Gold Medal Match between Singapore and England at 6.00 0m IST.
Athletics: In qualifying round of men’s hammer throw event Athlete Kamalpreet Singh will be in action. Jai Deep from India will take part in the Men’s Discus Throw F42/44 Final.
Boxing: Pinki Jangra will take guard in Women’s fly 48-51 kg round of 16 match.
Hockey: After losing 3-0 to New Zealand Indian eves will now face inexperienced Trinidad and Tobago at Glasgow National Hockey Centre.
Lawn Bowls: Sunil Bahadur, Dinesh Kumar, Samit Malhotra, Kamal Sharma, Chandan Singh will be in action in men’s category while Lovely Chubey, Tania Choudhry, Pinki, Nayanmonia Sakia, Rupa Rani Tirkey in women’s events.
Shooting: Jitu Rai and Gurpal Singh will aim for glory in 50m Pistol, Manavjit Singh Sandhu, Mansher Singh in men’s and Shreyasi Singh, Seema Tomar in women’s. Ace shooter Gagan Narang and Joydeep Karmakar will participate in 50m Rifle Prone. Vijay Kumar and Harpreet Singh in 25m Rapid Fire Pistol while Lajja Goswami and Meena Kumari in 50m Rifle Prone.
