Gold Coast, April 15: World no.1 Kidambi Srikanth made constant errors as he failed to overcome Malaysian legend Lee Chong Wei 21-19, 14-21, 14-21 in the men’s singles badminton event final here on Sunday to clinch gold medal. India, thus added 19th silver to their medal tally on the final day of the marquee tournament.
Srikanth took the first game in 23 minutes but the World no.7 Lee lived up to the expectations and returned in the second game to clinch it in 21 minutes. While the decider was taken by the Malaysian in 21 minutes as well.
Earlier, experienced Saina Nehwal stayed contended from the onset to defeat her Indian counter-part 21-18, 23-21 to clinch gold in the Commonwealth Games women’s singles final here on Sunday. Saina who took the first game with ease, kept her nerves and came from behind in the second game to clinch the close contest as Sindhu settled for a silver.
Following the match, India thus have a total of 62 medals in their kitty, which contains 26 gold, 17 silver and 19 bronze.
World.no 10, Saina took the first game in 22 minutes while the second game which was led away by ranked 3 in the World, Sindhu, was clinched by the experienced campaigner in 34 minutes.
In the first game, Saina dictated terms from the onset to clinch the game with ease. Sindhu came nowhere close to her Indian counter-part in the opening game, which she looked to give away with ease.
However, in the second game, Sindhu led in the initial 15 points. But Saina, used her experience to the fore to keep the Rio Olympics Silver medallist to her control and clinch the game which was neck-in-neck from the onset.
