India have had started on an even note early in the day, with weightlifter P Gururaja opening India’s medal account at the Games with a silver in the men’s 56 kg.
Gururaja failed in his first two attempts in the clean and jerk round, but he lifted 138 kg in his third. With a total of 249 kgs, he clinched the silver medal.
In Badminton, star player Saina Nehwal defeated Sri Lanka’s Madushika Dilrukshi Beruwelage 21-8, 21-4 to enhance India’s lead to 4-0. India had already won the match when its doubles players defeated the Sri Lankan duo as it took an unassailable lead of 3-0. India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty dismissed the Sri Lankan challenge of Dinuka Karunaratna and Buwaneka Goonethilleka 21-17, 21-14.
Meawhile, on a disappointing note, India’s hockey campaign was off to a disappointing start at the Commonwealth Games after the country’s women’s team was upstaged 2-3 by a lower-ranked Wales in a Group A clash here on Thursday.
The World No. 10 Indian team, chasing its first CWG medal after the 2006 Melbourne Games silver, trailed the first 30 minutes of the match, scored a couple of goals in the third period to draw level before conceding one in the dying minutes of the match to end up on the losing side against their World No. 26 rivals.
