The Indian women’s side playing their Bronze Medal Match tie against Australia at Scotctoun Table Tennis Venue in the Commonwealth Games lost 1-3 in the best of five matches. Playing the best of five rubber in the Women’s Team Bronze medal match, India fielded its players in form Manika Batra, Madhurika Suhas Patkar and Shamini Kumaresan but could find winner in Manika Batra’s winning Match 2 by 11-5, 8-11,11-8,11-7 against Jian Fang Lay.
Shamini Kumaresan started the competition for the Bronze medal against Ziyu Zhang of Australia. But she lost 11-5, 2-11, 11-6,11-9 that left Indian trailing 1-0. With Manika’s sole win of the event, India levelled the game at 1-1. The third match featured the doubles with Madhurika Suhas Patkar and Shamini Kumaresan from India and Miao Miao taking on Jian Fang Lay from Australia. But they conceded two game lead and lost 19-21, 11-3, 11-9, 4-11, 7-11. The do-or-die fourth match featured reverse singles with Madhurika Suhas Patkar playing against Ziyu Zhang. She lost the five game match number 4 and the team medal 9-11, 11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 9-11.
The 2010 silver medal winners at the Commonwealth Games had earlier failed to qualify for the summit clash in the Commonwealth Games as they lost their semi-final match 1-3 to defending champions Singapore at the Scotstoun Sports Campus here on Saturday. In the first singles, Tianwei Feng defeated Shamini Kumaresan 3-0 (11-1, 13-11, 11-5) but Manika Batra drubbed Mengyu Yu 3-2 (11-7, 5-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7) to level the tie at 1-all. However, Ye Lin and Mengyu won the doubles clash defeating Madhurika Patkar and Shamini 3-0 (11-9, 11-7, 11-5) to take a 2-1 lead, which they extended in the next match when Ye beat Manika 3-1 (11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 11-5) to win the tie 3-1.
