New Delhi, April 6: India’s Sanjita Chanu won a gold medal in the 53 kg category of weightlifting in Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. She lifted an impressive total of 192 kg to win the medal. She had won a gold in Glasgow in the 48 kg category as well.

This was India’s second gold medal in the ongoing games. The other gold was also brought by a woman athlete from Manipur– Mirabai Chanu. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won gold in the 48 kg category on Thursday.

India’s medal tally has reached three as the weightlifter Gururaja won a silver in the 56 kg category on Thursday.

Sanjita Chanu impressed with her performance as she pulled off a games record with an 84-kg lift in the snatch event. In the clean and jerk event, she lifted a stupendous 102 and 108 kg. In her third attempt, she tried to lift 112 kg but failed. Her opponent had to lift 113 kg to win a gold, but she couldn’t do so.

Chanu had risen to prominence after she had won a gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in 2012. In 2014 CWG, she had won the gold medal with a total lift of 173 kg when she was just 20 years old.

Meanwhile, former cricketer Virender Sehwag has congratulated Chanu for winning the medal. Bhartiya Naari Sab par Bhaari. One more Gold. Congratulations  “#SanjitaChanu (sic)  for winning our second gold in #GC2018Weightlifting in the women’s 53kg category. #CWG2018. Her second CWG gold after the 48kg one in Glasgow. Proud of you champion,” he wrote on Twitter.

The Aam Aadmi Party also congratulated for the feat.” Congratulations Golden Girl #SanjitaChanu on winning the Gold medal for India at #GC2018 as she wins the medal by lifting a total of 192 kg,” a tweet from AAP’s official Twitter handle read.
