Day Seven at Roland Garros saw the top seed and defending champion Rafael Nadal cruise to the fourth round of French Open 2014. Playing some sensational tennis at the Stade Roland Garros, the World No. 1 was brutal against Argentine Leonardo Mayer winning 6-2, 7-5, 6-2. The audience saw a spectacular match by Nadal but he admitted of being in trouble with lower back pain. Nadal is not very known for opening up on injuries during tournaments but one could clearly see the amount of pain the Spaniard was during the match against Mayer.
The match of the day was certainly between the Frenchman Gael Monflis and Italian Fabio Fognini, with the former winning in marathon five sets 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2. The battle between the 23rd seed Monfilis and 14th seed Fogini was full of action and lots of drama, with both the players fighting it out till the last point. There were in total 137 unforced errors and 19 break of serves between the two, with Gael Monflis emerging the winner.
In the women’s singles the match the fall of top seeds continued with the fifth seed Petra Kvitova from Czech Republic falling short against 27th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova. The match was won by Russian after the long three hours thirteen minutes 6-7 (3), 6-1, 9-7.
The highest seed left in the draw so far at French Open 2014, fourth seed Simona Halep from Romania beat Marma Teresa Torrs Flor from Spain 6-3, 6-0 easily.
The results Saturday at the French Open, the seventh day of the season’s second Grand Slam tournament at Roland Garros (prefix number denotes seeding), were as follows, according to Xinhua.
