All-rounder Hardik Pandya entered the record books by smashing 26 runs in one over against Sri Lanka in the ongoing third and final Test at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy. Pandya slammed spinner Malinda Pushpakumara for two fours and three sixes in one over to score most runs in an over by an Indian batsman in Tests.
The Indian all-rounder now sits third on the overall list along with Craig McMillan, Brian Lara, Mitchell Johnson and Brendon McCullum. The list is topped by Brian Lara and George Bailey who slammed 28 runs in over while Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi is at number two with 27 off one over against Harbhajan Singh.
As far as India is concerned, Pandya surpassed legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev and Sandeep Patil’s tally of 24 runs in one over. The incident took place in 116th over when Pandya slammed Pushpakumara for 6,6,6,4,4 on first five balls and much to the relief of the bowler the last ball was a dot one. The all-rounder reached to 83 from 57 in the space of just five deliveries.
Pandya then sensed the opportunity to convert his fifty into a century and played with caution. However, he smashed a couple of sixes and a four to reach the three-figure mark in 86 balls. It was Pandya’s maiden Test century.
The right-hander scored first fifty off 61 balls while his second fifty came off just 25 balls. At lunch on day two, Pandya was unbeaten on 108 off 93 balls with seven fours and eight sixes against his name.
