Gold Coast, April 13: Pooja Dhanda came close on a gold medal but had to settle for silver after losing to Odunayo Adekuoroye in the summit clash of the 57kg freestyle wrestling in the Commonwealth Games 2018 here on Friday.
Pooja earned the initial point as a warning on her opponent. However, Odunayo came from behind to outplay Pooja and take 5 consecutive points to take her lead to 6-1. at the end of the first round.
In the final three minutes, the Nigerian counter-part used her movements well disallowing Pooja to grapple her. In the dying minutes, Pooja came back to cut short the deficit to 5-7 to settle for silver medal.
Earlier, Star Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia outclassed Kane Charig from Wales by techincal superiority 10-0 to earn Gold medal in the 65 kg freestyle wrestling category in the Commonwealth Games 2018 at the Gold Coast here on Friday. India, thus earned their 17th Gold medal and in the marquee tournament, while it was the first for the Indian.
Bajrang started on the front-foot from the onset of the bout. He got hold of Charig and tactically outplayed him, injuring him mildly in the process to blank him in the bout.
