Left-handed opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan was named as the replacement for injured Murali Vijay for the upcoming India’s tour of Sri Lanka. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Twitter on Monday.
Dhawan, who has been in good form in limited-overs, was initially ignored for the Test series. The squad already features openers KL Rahul and Abhinav Mukund apart from Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma, who can used as makeshift openers. Vijay’s wrist injury, which kept him out of Indian Premier League (IPL ) Season 10, seems to be haunting the batsman yet again. The right-handed batsman complained of pain in his right wrist while playing a preparatory match and thus has been advised to continue his rehabilitation program by the BCCI medical team.
Meanwhile, Dhawan returns to Test squad having last represented India in 2016 against New Zealand. Following fractured left thumb Dhawan was ruled out of Test series against Kiwis. However, the left-hander was already struggling with his form in the longest format. Dhawan did not feature in India’s home Tests against England, Bangladesh and Australia. India kick-off their Sri Lanka tour with the first Test at Galle on July 26. The teams will lock horns in two more Tests followed by five ODIs and one-off T20I.
