New Delhi: The spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were once again rested for the upcoming One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against Australia. The duo was rested for limited-overs leg of Sri Lanka tour as well.
The selectors on Sunday named the squad for first three ODIs against Australia and both Ashwin and Jadeja were rested as per the Board’s rotation policy.
Now, team India’s head coach Ravi Shastri has made it clear that both Ashwin and Jadeja cannot be in the team all the time. Shastri said the focus is currently on Test cricket and thus the spinners cannot play every limited-overs series.
“We can’t play Ashwin and Jadeja all the time. There is enough time for Ashwin to get back into the team because the World Cup is still two years away. Emphasis has to be on Test cricket,” Shastri was quoted as saying by India Today.
In absence of Ashwin and Jadeja, Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal were included in the squad for limited-overs series against Sri Lanka. After their impressive performance, the selectors decided to retain to the young spinners for first three matches against Australia.
It will be interesting to see whether selectors bring back Ashwin or Jadeja for the fourth and fifth ODIs or three-match T20Is.
India’s next Test series is again against Sri Lanka at home and it is very likely both Ashwin and Jadeja will be named in the Test squad.
