Local boy Mahendra Singh Dhoni reached JSCA Stadium to cheer Virat Kohli and his team on day five of the third Test in Ranchi.

When Ranchi was hosting its first-ever Test match, Dhoni was away in New Delhi leading Jharkhand in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where they crashed out after losing their semifinal match to Bengal. Moreover, he and his Jharkhand team-mates had a close shave when they were safely evacuated after a fire mishap at the team hotel.

India on day four declared their first innings at 603 for 9 in reply to Australia’s 451 and also managed to take two wickets at the end of day’s play. The visitors were expected to collapse on a crumbling day five pitch, but after losing Matt Renshaw and Steve Smith in the morning session, Marsh and Handscomb completely stone-walled India.

To keep the interest intact, BCCI took Test cricket to smaller cities of India by announcing new venues for the longer format of the game. Surprisingly, in this Test match in Ranchi the crowd turn out has not been encouraging. But could have seen a packed house, if Dhoni had been playing Test cricket.
