Hello and welcome to India.com’s live coverage of the fourth Test of the five-match series between India and England. Hosts India lead the series 2-0 while England are beleaguered by injury woes. While India will eye for the series victory at Wankhede, England will try to make a turnaround to get back into the series. Stay with us as we provide you the live updates throughout the day.
Build-up: The first Test of the series in Rajkot was drawn, but in Visakhapatnam and Mohali India emerged victorious to take a 2-0 lead over England. For the touring party, who are trailing the series, the Mumbai Test has become a turning point. In 2012 England made a comeback at Wankhede to equalise and went on to win the series.
This time too England are trailing the series 2-0 so this will be their last chance to turn around the fortune in their favour. England have a good depth in their batting order but injuries affected their campaign. Key seamer Stuart Broad failed to play the third Test due to injury while young opener Haseeb Hameed, who impressed everyone with his temperament and technique, and rookie spinner Zafar Ansari were sent back home owing to a hairline fracture in the finger and twisted shoulder respectively. Two new players Keaton Jennings, the son of former Proteas coach Ray Jennings, and spinner Liam Dawson called to play the remaining series. The inclusion of two uncapped players means opener Alastair Cook will once again will have a new partner. And his new partner Keaton Jennings is unfamiliar with Indian conditions.
Meanwhile, India too have been plagued with injuries. India’s opening department doesn’t have any permanent solution. Shikhar Dhawan is yet to recover from a broken finger, alternative opener KL Rahul was recalled to play the second Test in Vizag, but he suffered a shoulder injury during fielding. Alongside them, India’s regular wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha failed to recover from an injury that means Parthiv Patel, who made comeback after eight years of Test cricket hiatus, will keep his vigil behind the stumps. Patel has impressed team management with his batting skill. In the first innings, while opening. Patel scored 42 and in the second innings, he scored a fast paced 67. One the eve of the match, Indian selectors have to call Manish Pandey as out of form middle order batsman Ajinkya Rahane suffered a thumb injury during the net session. Pacer Mohammad Shami is also a doubtful starter due to a sore knee. So Mumbai pacer Sahrdul Thakur has been included in the team. Manish and Thakur’s inclusion exposed how injuries hurt the Indian team in this five-match Test series.
The Wankhede pitch will be different from other three Test matches of the series. As the Indian team management requested to prepare a spin friendly pitch, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) pitch curator Mamunkar prepared a rank-turner. In the previous three Tests ball was coming to bat well and batsmen didn’t find any problem while playing shots, but at Wankhede, the spinners will bamboozle the oppositions from day three as expected. The pitch was prepared to ensure that hosts India seal the series at Wankhede.
However, when Indian tweakers Ravichandran, Ravindra Jadeja and Jayant Yadav will be dangerous, England too have weapons in their rank as leg-spinner Adil Rashid, off-spinner Moeen Ali, and uncapped Liam Dawson will pose an immense challenge to Indian batsmen. The current Indian batting line failed to capitalize after top order gave a good start. The middle order is sloppy and the opening pair is yet to settle down. So it is expected that both teams will not leave an inch for each other, so it will be an exciting Test match which will be a special moment for the fans. (Build-up by Sudipta Biswas).
