On day one, Keaton Jennings’ ton was the highlight, before Ravi Ashwin helped India put a fightback. Jennings, who replaced injured Haseeb Hameed, became the 19th England player to score a century on Test debut. The left-hander looked impressive on his debut as he made most of the reprieve Karun Nair provided him early on in the innings. Young Jennings along with Alastair Cook put on a 99-run opening stand to help visitors get off to a solid start. Also Catch- India vs England 4th Test Day 1, Highlights
The opening two sessions clearly belonged to England. The Cook-led side notched 196 runs for the loss of two wickets. However, the hosts had a better outing in the last session with Ashwin doing the damage. The spinner picked three wickets, including two in one over, to peg back England. He accounted for well-set Moeen Ali, who scored 50, and Jennings in the same over and that tilted the session in favour of India somewhat.
On day two, England will be hoping that the Stokes-Buttler stand evolves and takes the side to a strong position. For India, the task will be cut out to try and restrict England under 400. The wicket is likely to assist spinners more on day two. Moreover, India have not taken the second new ball yet and will be interesting to see how the action unfolds once India takes it on day two.
