India’s Union Sports Ministry has launched the scheme of Target Olympic Podium (TOP) for the 2016 Olympics barely a year and a half before the mega sports event. Now, the sports ministry is trying to launch another scheme to produce a better result for the 2020 Olympics. This time the sports ministry is planning to launch the TOP scheme three years before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The central government of India taking the cue of India’s performance in the 2016 Olympics set a task force to prepare a plan for effective participation in the Olympics soon after the Rio Games.
Talking about the work of task force Indian sports minister Vijay Goel, who was in Rio de Janeiro with the Indian contingent during the Rio Olympic, said that they didn’t announce any names of the members of the task force, but “ we have formalized everything. “ However, “the process of setting up the task force took time because we were holding a meeting with various stakeholders the federations, Olympians, Dhronacharya awardees and state sports ministers.” After having a discussion with all stakeholder, the Sports Minister will kick start the work of task force.
Goel confirmed that the next system would also be a TOP scheme and it will be launched this month. “We are working towards 2020, 2024 and 2028 Olympics apart from major events like the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. He also stressed that the ministry is also trying to create a sports map identifying the knack of youngsters in all states of India. “For boxing, Haryana and Manipur have been identified and likewise, Hyderabad for badminton and Sonipat for wrestling,” Goel said.
The scheme will be launched on January 21 and the government is going to launch a talent search website through which the talented sportsperson from the age of 8 to 10 years can upload a video or biodata. Goel ensured that official at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) will screen them and call the deserving candidates for the training. “At various SAI centers will screen them and deserving people will be absorbed into SAI. Also, we will fix the responsibilities of the federations as well because they are the ones who are picking the teams and recommending coaches as well,” Goel stated.
