All it took was Yusuf Pathan’s blitzkrieg to not only hand Kolkata Knight Riders a win but seal the second spot on points table as “Baroda Bomber” smashed fastest IPL fifty off just 15 balls.
KKR needed to chase 161 in 15.2 overs to push down Chennai Super Kings from second spot. Openers Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa started off cautiously but soon took the attack to the SRH bowlers. Jason Holder bowled couple of no-balls in his first over and was belted for boundaries but he had the last laugh when an inside edge off his ball went on to crash Gambhir’s (28) stumps and thus KKR lost their first wicket at 43.
Few overs later Manish Pandey (2) sliced straight to Dale Steynnear boundary ropes off Karn Sharmato see KKR trapped at 55-2 in 7.3 overs. One ball later Anirudha dropped a sitter as Yusuf Pathan was looking to heave on the leg side off first ball he faced. Uthappa kept playing his strokes as he for the ninth consecutive time went past score of 40. Leg spinner Karn Sharma after being hit for six by Uthappa (41) had him caught at long-on. Disaster struck KKR when in the same over Ryan Ten Doeschate was run-out for a duck and KKR were tumbling at 78-4 in 9.4 overs.
Parvez Rasool was brought into the attack and his first ball was dispatched for six by Yusuf Pathan over square leg region. Two balls later an edge from Pathan’s bat went down to third man region for a boundary. Rasool started to push ball quicker through air and a chance was created which Steyn spilled and the ball went for six, giving Pathan his second life. Next ball Pathan swung down the ground where Holder made mess of the ball and it rolled on tothe advertising ropes for four and Pathan with that accumulated 22 runs off Rasool’s over and KKR reached 100-4 in 11 overs.
Pathan then in next over butchered leggie Karn Sharma fortwo 6s. On last ball Shakib (1) who was a mute spectator at the other end decided to join the party but he holed out to Holder at long-off region and KKR lost fifth wicket for 116 runs.
Dale Steyn was brought back in13th over to contain Pathan but it all went wrong as the mighty hitter belted Steyn for 26 runs hitting two 6s, three 4s and a double to notch up fastest IPL fifty off just 15 balls.
KKR then needed 18 off 14 balls to occupy second spot and Pathan looked in mood to slow down as he smashed a six and a four before being caught at mid-wicket. Pathan completely took game away for SRH as he scored 72 off just 22 balls smashing seven humongous 6s and five 4.
In 1n 15th over Bhuvneshwar Kumar then bowled a wide ball before being hit for a six by Surya Kumar Yadav and thus KKR finished chase in just 14.2 overs to topple CSK from second place.
Karn Sharma (4-38) and Jason Holder (1-35)were the only SRH bowlers to pick wickets.
Earlier, put to bat first Sunrisers Hyderabad kept losing wickets at regular intervals and managed to score 160-7 in 20 overs. KKR fielders missed some simple catches but Manish Pandey was livewire in the field as he ran two batsmen out. Darren Sammy connected few big hits in the end and that took SRH past 150.
Sunil Narine went wicket less in his four overs but was economical giving away just 19 runs. Shakib Al Hassan finished with figures of 1-25in his four overs. Seamers Morne Morkel and Vinay Kumar both had replica figures of 1-32. Ran ten Doeschate bowled just one over and picked a wicket at the cost of seven runs.
With this win KKR will now face KXIP in the qualifier 1 at Eden Gardens on Tuesday.
