Chasing 163 to win Mumbai Indians could not solve the mystery of spinner Sunil Narine and fell short of target by 41 runs and handed Kolkata Knight Riders a win in the opening game.

Mumbai Indians did not have the best of starts, losing Michael Hussey (3) inside the power play. Hussey took 13 balls to score those three runs before a faster one from Sunil Narine skidded onto his stumps. Aditya Tare (24) looking to keep his onslaught going chipped one straight into the air and handed Shakib al Hassan a simple catch which he almost made mess of. MI was 40/2 in 7.5 overs after his dismissal.

The proficient pair of Ambati Rayudu and Rohit Sharma then took the centre stage and kept the scoreboard ticking. The duo added 61 runs for the 3rd wicket before Skipper Rohit Sharma (27) was caught on the boundary ropes. Narine came back for his spell and had Rayudu (48) stumped. It was then up to the dangerous duo of Kieron Pollard and Corey Anderson, the best in business to finish things off in style but Narine and Piyush Chawla made sure they don’t give away freebies.

Anderson in his first IPL innings was bowled for just two courtesy another Narine classic. Good bowling display by KKR made sure match stays out of MI grasp. Morne Morkel bowled exquisitely and gave away just 16 runs in his quota of four overs.

Sunil Narine bowled with variety and he could have easily had Anderson very early but Robin Uthappa behind the stumps was not up to the mark and dropped him. Nonetheless Narine who was unplayable maintained an economy of 5, picking four wickets at the expenses of just 20 runs and he became the fastest to pick 50 wickets in IPL (32 matches)  Shakib al Hassan, Morne Morkel and leggie Chawla picked one wicket each.

Earlier, KKR won the toss and decided to bat first. Senior pro Jacques Kallis and Manish Pandey batted team out of trouble with a partnership of 131 runs and helped KKR post a competitive score of 163. Malinga was pick of the MI bowlers bagging four wickets while Zaheer picked one wicket.

Man of the Match: Jacques Kallis
Brief Scores: KKR 163-5 (Kallis 72, Malinga 4-23) bt MI 122-7 (Rayudu 48, Narine4-20) by 41 runs.
