IPL 2014, RCB vs CSK: Royal Challengers Bangalore clinch cliff-hanger to stay alive against Chennai Super Kings

Royal Challengers Bangalore held onto their nerve and defeated Chennai Super Kings by five wickets in a low-score thriller.

With wicket on slower side and spinners getting grip on the pitch, target of 139 seemed to be a hard work for RCB batsmen. Mohit Sharma started the proceeding for CSK and nine runs in his first over made MS Dhoni realise there is nothing in pitch for seamers. Ravi Ashwin was implemented on the other end and he straightaway made Parthiv Patel and Chris Gayle dance to his tunes.

With Samuel Badree bowling from other side RCB openers were kept chained. Ashwin was spinning the ball effectively and Parthiv (10) had no idea how to play him as he tried to sweep him but ball looped up once it hit back of the bat straight to Suresh Raina at first slip.

Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli had no answers to CSK spinners and after power play RCB were 17-1. Dhoni kept persisting with spinners as he brought Suresh Raina in to the attack. At the end of 10 overs RCB scored at a rate of 4.50 and were 45-1.

RCB had a plan to keep wickets intact and they stuck to it. In 11th over Gayle and Kohli got a move on as they hit Jadeja for 13 runs. The duo then took the attack to CSK bowlers and handed their team with a momentum. Kohli and Gayle shared 61 runs for the 2nd wicket between them before Jadeja had Kohli stumped (27).

Gayle kept playing his shots and AB de Villiers too joined in.Ashwin was brought back into the attack for his last over and he removed dangerous Gayle who scored 46 off 50 balls leaving RCB 110-3 in 17 overs.

One over later David Hussey scalped most important wicket of the night by picking de Villiers who played a 14-ball 28 run cameo to give RCB an edge.

RCB needed 14 runs from the last two overs and it was up to Yuvraj Singh to deliver the final blow. Jadeja beat him for three consecutive deliveries and put RCB under pressure. Yuvraj scampered for a double and then a single to retain the strike for last over.

Dhoni had lot of choices up his sleeve to choose who will bowl the final over, Samuel Badree, Mohit Sharma and Ishwar Pandey who was yet to bowl an over. Dhoni surprisingly handed the ball to David Hussey. With 10 needed from last over Yuvraj smashed him for a six over mid-on to bring required runs down to four off five balls. Sachin Rana (1)was out on fourth ball. With Yuvraj off strike RCB still needed one run from two balls. Abu Nechim surprised one and all when he came down the track and hit Hussey over mid-on for a four to seal the deal for RCB by five wickets.

Earlier, MS Dhoni opted to bat first on a wicket which was expected to behave slow later on. Suresh Raina batted throughout CSK innings and helped his team post a defendable score given the conditions at Ranchi. Abu Nechim and Mitchell Starc in last two overs kept Raina and Jadeja in check and did not allow them to free their arms.Varun Aaron picked two wickets early on in his spell as he removed both CSK openers.
