Late Chelsea goal helps beat PSG to reach semi-finals of Champions League

A late Demba Ba goal saw Chelsea qualify for the Champions League semi-finals. PSG who were leading 3-1 from the first-leg of the round, were unable to keep Chelsea at bay on what will be another famous night at the Stamford Bridge. Chelsea won 2-0 against the French giants.

Chelsea took a while to get going into the match. PSG were happy to sit back and defend any attack Chelsea brought up. The French champions then tried to launch counter attacks through Brazilian winger Lucas Moura. (Check out the action in pics)

The Blues had several attempts saved by PSG keeper Salvatore Sirigu. Frank Lampard almost scored just before the 30 minute mark, when his fierce free kick from the wing deflected off the wall before being saved by the Italian keeper. Chelsea took the lead through Andre Schurrle capitalized on a long-throw from the right.

In the second half, Chelsea could have gone two more goals to the good if it hadn’t been for the crossbar. The lively Willian squared a pass for Schurrle who laced his effort to beat Sirigu but strike against the crossbar. Only a minute later Oscar’s free kick hit the bar.It looked like it would be a long night where the crossbar and Sirigu were keeping Chelsea from getting that crucial goal.

Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani who deputized in the Zlatan Ibrahimovic role in the Swede’s absence didn’t look like he brought his scoring boots. The striker had two clear chances for PSG but skied them both over.

Late into the final few minutes of the game, Demba Ba exploited a PSG defence that lost concentration to scoop home the goal that eluded them for so long. The dramatic late winner caused an ecstatic Jose Mourinho to run to celebrate with the Chelsea players at the other end of the touchline.
