Manchester United slump to 1-2 defeat against Norwich City in EPL 2015-16; pressure mounts on Louis van Gaal
The 20-time champions, who now slip to the fifth spot, behind Tottenham Hostspur on goal difference.
The Manchester United faithful broke into a chorus of boos at final whistle. Rivals Chelsea are still smarting from sacking Jose Mourinho and on current form, all roads point towards Louis van Gaal getting the boot.
It was United who set the pace against lowly Norwich City. Anthony Martial was back in his element and made himself quite a nuisance down the right flank. Wayne Rooney, coming back into the side after a one-month injury layoff was showed some of the spark that had deserted him for much of this season. The Manchester United skipper created an early chance but it was scrambled wide of goal by the Norwich backline, who were under the cosh during the early part of the game.
Norwich slowly got a footing in the game and Alex Tettey had a clear sight of goal after putting in the hard yards in the buildup. His shot however, was straight to David De Gea. The goal soon arrived. Nathan Redmond set it up, getting a decisive pass to Cameron Jerome, who was clinical in cutting the ball past Michael Carrick and smashing the ball into the net. Things would only go worse from there for United as Jerome turned playmaker early into the second half and sent Tettey through.
The Norwich forward burst forward and smashed a fine shot from just outside the area. Norwich had taken the lead and there were moans from the anxious crowd at Old Trafford. Marital was rewarded for his efforts as he scored with more than 25 minutes to play. It looked like the Red Devils would make one of their trademark comebacks but their wave of attacks were well dealt with by the Canaries. Rooney attempted an overhead kick, which went wide but briefly, it looked like he was going to repeat his ‘Goal of the decade’ attempt in the Manchester derby from 2011.
Juan Mata and Martial came close in the final minutes but the away side held on to jump above the relegation zone in style. After losing to newly promoted Bournemouth, this is another setback for the 20-time champions, who now slip to the fifth spot, behind Tottenham Hostspur on goal difference.
