Glenn Maxwell and David Miller put in a King size effort to see Kings XI Punjab chase down an Everest target of 206 runs with six wickets in hand and seven balls to spare. Chasing a daunting target Kings XI Punjab needed a typical Sehwag special and he provided a shade of that before Ashish Nehra came back and knocked out his leg-stump. Sehwag scored 19 runs off 10 balls, hitting four 4s in his short stay at the crease.
Captain Dhoni then turned to Ravi Ashwin and he did not disappoint him, picking two quick wickets that of Cheteshwar Pujara (13) and Akshar Patel (2), both trapped in front of the wicket. At the end of power play KXIP were 64-3. Glenn Maxwell and David Miller threw cautions to the wind and went on rampage to see KXIP inch closer to the tough task. Maxwell was lucky when Ashish Nehra at short third man dropped a sitter off Jadeja’s bowling. Maxwell then went onto notch his maiden IPL fifty. Miller kept rotating the strike as Maxwell was clearing ropes at will.
Luck seemed to be floating Maxwell’s way as he was again dropped, this time by substitute Samuel Badree at square leg, he was on 77 then. Dhoni looked out of options as Dwayne Bravo was injured and rushed to hospital. He then handed the ball to Dwayne Smith to fill in Bravo’s void. Smith responded well even after going for too many runs as he had the last laugh cleaning Maxwell with a perfect Yorker length delivery. Maxwell fell five runs short of hundred scoring 95 runs off just 43 balls, his innings comprised of 15 4s and two 6s.
Miller took over from where Maxwell left and brought the required run rate down by hitting two towering sixes off Jadeja in 17th over and in that very over also raised his half- century. Target then was couple of blows away as Miller and George Bailey drove KXIP home. ‘’Miller Killer’’ remained unbeaten on 54 while Captain Bailey who scored 17 off 10 balls hit the winning runs.
Ashwin picked two wickets while Nehra and Smith snipped one wicket apiece. Earlier, Chennai Super kings won the toss and elected to bat.Courtesy century stand by Openers Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith CSK got the launch pad they needed to set a big total. McCullum’s 67 came off 45 balls including four 4s and five humongous 6s, while Smith scored 66 runs. MS Dhoni’s cameo at the end saw CSK cross 200 run mark.
