Novak Djokovic [1] vs Grigor Dimitrov [11]: Wimbledon Men’s Singles Semi-final 2014 Preview

Novak Djokovic [1] vs Grigor Dimitrov [11]

Coming into the men’s singles semi finals , many would have been expecting a repeat clash of last year finalists Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray playing each other. But the dream of defending champion Andy Murray was cut short by No. 11 seed Grigor Dimitrov who defeated No. 3 seed in a lop-sided quarter-final match. And so here we are with two players in supreme form taking on each other for a place in the prestigious Wimbledon Championships 2014 final – top seed Novak Djokovic from Serbia and challenging him is No. 11 seed Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria.

Novak Djokovic who has been touted as the hot favourite to lift the Wimbledon trophy again (he has won the title in 2011) before the start of the tournament had a tough time in his last outing against No. 26 seed Marin Cilic of Croatia. Trailing behind the Croatian, Djokovic was stretched to play a marathon five sets match in the quarter-finals. He won it 6-1, 3-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. There were times when Djokovic was troubled by Cilic’s smart play and great movement on court, something that Djokovic will have to keep in mind against Grigor Dimitrov who is yet to lose on grass court.

Grigor Dimitrov who is more famous as being tennis pin-up girl Maria Sharapova’s boyfriend is slowly turning out to be head turner on court with his fantastic game. Winner of Junior Wimbledon Championships in 2008, 23-year-old Dimitrov would be itching to get his name etched on the Wimbledon trophy. The way he swept aside the No. 3 seed and defending champion Andy Murray to make his first ever grand slam appearance was phenomenal. He needed just over two hours to hammer Murray and win it in style 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

Novak Djokovic enjoys a commendable 3-1 head-to-head over the 11th seed but going by the looks and confidence of Grigor Dimitrov brushing him off as no competition would be far-fetched idea. Grigor has won at Queen’s Club and is riding high on confidence with his 10 match winning streak on the grass court. If he continued with his sublime form, Grigor Dimitrov can end up troubling Novak and may also produce yet another shocking result.
