On August 19, 2016, Sindhu, after producing a spirited fight-back to clinch the first game, failed to capitalize on it and went on to lose the next two games with a big margin against Marin in the summit clash of the prestigious quadrennial event.
The Spaniard took about one hour and 20 minutes to outclass Sindhu, the two-time bronze medallist at the World Championship, 19-21, 21-12, 21-15 and seal a gold medal in a nerve-wracking summit showdown.
Talking about how life has changed after the Rio feat, Marin says, “My life has changed a lot after Rio. People recognise me in Spain. I feel very happy that I have open that way to show in Spain that they are more than football and everyone is following badminton and also me.”
