The Blues who began the game without a recognized striker made a sluggish start and were punished early on when Chelsea captain John Terry could not clear the ball, leaving Ezequiel Lavezzi to control the loose ball before drilling a volley high into the net leaving Petr Cech no chance. Chelsea then managed to get back into the game through a penalty scored by Eden Hazard. Thiago Silva brought down Oscar in the box to award Chelsea the equalizer.

Things got worse for Jose Mourinho’s side as David Luiz bundled home a second half own goal. The Brazilian defender was unable to get out of the way of a Marco Verratti free-kick and saw the ball go past a helpless Petr Cech.

Just before the final whistle coud be blown Pastore pounced to make it 3-1 to the French champions to give Chelsea plenty of work to do in the return leg at Stamford Bridge. The Argentine midfielder took advantage of aweful defending from Chelsea as he twisted and turned around the defenders to grab the third. A great solo effort out of nothing.
