Real Madrid survive 2-0 scare from Borussia Dortmund to qualify for the semi-finals of the Champions League
Two goals from Marco Reus rattled Real Madrid but Borussia Dortmund fall just short of miracle to qualify for the next round of the Champions League.
Borussia Dortmund gave Real Madrid a run for their money as Marco Reus struck a brace to win 2-0 and come mighty close to reaching the semi finals of the Champions League. The German powerhouse just could not find the third goal.
Dortmund were confident of turning a huge 3-0 deficit from the first-leg but were forced to bow out 3-2 on aggregate against a Real Madrid that lacked their superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese who wasn’t quite fit enough to play a part, watched from the sidelines in anguish as the Germans almost nicked a place in the semi-finals.
Amidst the ever-so-intimidating atmosphere of the Signal Iduna Park, the hosts almost went behind early on from a spot-kick which was harshly awarded for a hand-ball. Roman Weidenfeller came to the rescue to keep out an Angel Di Maria attempt from the spot. Game on! Dortmund were still in it after the heroics of the German keeper.
Jurgen Klopp’s side tried to take advantage of being let off from the tame Di Maria penalty and Reus grabbed the opportunity. The lively winger capitalized on a mistake made by Pepe to round Iker Casillas and coolly slot home the first.
The goalscorer then added to his tally to crash in the rebound after Robert Lewandowski’s attempt hit the post.
Borussia Dortmund were then looking for the goal to level the tie on aggregate but Real Madrid defended well. Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan then spurned two glorious opportunities. Casillas who lost his clean sheet was instrumental in keeping Real Madrid on course to reaching the semi-finals for the fourth season running.
