In what is seen as the major upset of the tournament, Kei Nishikori playing his just 25th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event, ousted the World no. 5 Roger Federer after rigorous three setter 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Currently ranked 21st in the ATP ranking, Japanese player came back from a set down to stun the two time winner at the Sony Open Tennis in Florida.
Roger Federer’s surprise loss at the hands of young player would again set the tongues wagging of his critics on whether he should hang the boots. The 32-year old, has been showing great form this year after the loss faced at the hands of Spanish Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open 2014. He had been finalist in the last two events at Dubai Open and Indian Wells. He was eventually winner at the Dubai Open while losing to Serbian Novak Djokovic at the Indian Wells.
His successive meeting with Novak Djokovic was cut down by the fiery Nishikori who displayed a motivated match against the 17-time grand slam winner. Roger Federer took the first set 6-3, but his service game did not show the charisma he is known for. The third set went down the wires, but the lapse in concentration of Federer handed Nishikori his second win against Federer.
