First medal of it kind in the Para Power-lifting event, weightlifter Sakina Khatun won bronze medal in in Women’s Lightweight group A event category. Nigerian Esther Oyema bagged gold and Natalie Blake came second to get silver medal. Sakina picked up a total of 88.2 kg to come third. The Nigerian lifted a massive 136 kg while the Englishwoman picked up a weight of 100.2 kg.
With Sakina’s bronze medal, India has won a total of 52 medals with 13 gold, 23 silver and 16 bronze medal. This was also 13th medal for the the Indian weightlifting team who have won 3 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze. Led by brilliant show by Indian weightlifters Sanjita Khumukchan in women’s 48 kg weightlifting, Sukhen Dey in men’s 56 kg weightlifting and Satish Sivalingam in men’s 77 kg weightlifting to bag the gold, Indian weighlifter have made significant contribution in this edition of Commonwealth Games 2014.
India who are place at the medal table will also be featuring four lifters in the Para Power-lifting event – Farman Basha, Rajinder Rahelu and Sakina Khatun.
