Serena Williams follows sister Venus out of French Open following second-round defeat

London, May 29 : Defending champion Serena Williams has suffered a shock second round defeat at the French Open on a dramatic fourth day, following her sister Venus out of the tournament. Serena lost 6-2, 6-2 to Spain’s Garbine Muguruza after Venus had been beaten 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Slovakian Anna Schmiedlova at Roland Garros.

According to the BBC, it is the first time in her career that Serena has failed to reach the second week of a Grand Slam as the top seed, and the Williams sisters’ defeat means that the projected third-round clash between them will now feature Muguruza and Schmiedlova. The 2002 and 2013 Roland Garros champion made 29 errors and just eight winners in a 64-minute defeat that means she will not add to her 17 Grand Slam titles this fortnight. The report mentioned that world number 35 Muguruza turned pro in 2011 and is making only her sixth Grand Slam appearance.
