Shuttler Parupalli Kashyap wins gold in the Men's Singles Final at the Commonwealth Games 2014

Parupalli Kashyap

India’s most experienced singles shuttler in the Commonwealth Games 2014, Parupalli Kashyap did not let down his side as he bagged the gold medal in the Men’s Singles Final match at Glasgow. The second seed Indian defeated Derek Wong from Singapore in a tightly contested final match. He won it in three games 21-14, 11-21, 21-19, in a match played for over an hour. He started off well to take the first game 21-14 in 15 minutes but Wong turned it around to level the final by taking the second game 21-11. The third set could not have been a more nail-biting game as it looked to go either way but Kashyap kept his nerves in control to win the match.

Parupalli Kashyap had lost in the semi-finals in the last edition of Commonwealth Games 2010 and had to be content with bronze medal but he went a step further to bag first gold medal in badminton at the 20th Commonwealth Games. This comes after Indian’s PV Sindhu and RV Gurusaidutt bagged bronze medal from their respective women’s and men’s singles event. India’s medal tally go up to 62 including 15 gold, 28 silver and 19 bronze.

Earlier Kashyap earned a hard-fought three-game semi-final victory over England’s Rajiv Ouseph to succeed where he failed last time. The Hyderabadi had lost the semi-final four years ago at home and had to settle for the bronze. After going down 18-21 in the first game, Kashyap came back strongly to win the next two 21-17, 21-18 in a marathon match which lasted an hour and 23 minutes.
