The games of Matchday 23 on Tuesday saw Juan Mata don a new shirt, many impressive goals and a missed chance to increase the lead at the top of the English Premier League. Arsenal left the door open for Manchester City to overtake them and Manchester United won their third straight home match. In the 222nd Merseyside derby, Liverpool schooled their rivals Everton. Here are a few things we learned from the matches last night:

Southampton Vs Arsenal: Premier League leaders Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw by Southampton on Tuesday at a rainy St. Mary’s Stadium.

1 – Sam Gallagher is a talented kid off the St Mary’s conveyor belt. The Scottish youngster is a real handful upfront for the Saints and will be a star in the years to come.

2 – As for Arsenal, this is where their problems begin. The 2-2 draw ended Arsenal’s run of seven straight wins in all competitions. The psychological damage it could cause can’t be underestimated as Manchester City and Chelsea both could overtake them if they win against Tottenham and respectively on Wednesday.

3 – With Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky and an important Aaron Ramsey out, the midfield looks out of shape. Injuries to the Arsenal players could cost them the title. Maybe a last delve into the transfer market for Arsene Wenger before it closes?

Manchester United Vs Cardiff City: Manchester United won the first game of the Juan Mata era in style, beating Cardiff City 2-0. Robin Van Persie and Ashley Young were the scorers.

1 – A comfortable debut for latest signing Juan Mata showed that his presence can indeed lift up Manchester United’s fortunes in the English Premier League. The Spaniard is already off the assist mark and was instrumental in the other goal.

2 – Robin van Persie’s return brings  the squad a cutting edge to finish off opponents. Add to that the options of fielding Wayne Rooney and/or Adnan Januzaj to mix up the play. The attack is sorted for the rest of the season.

3 – Man United fans do not forget their heroes and the fans in Old Trafford serenaded Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with songs throughout the game.

4 – Ashley Young scores only the brilliant goals but that won’t be enough to save his fate at Old Trafford. David Moyes likens Young on the left-wing to Shinji Kagawa but it was evident how wasteful the Englishman can be with the ball in possession.

Liverpool Vs Everton: Liverpool ensured that Merseyside remained “Red” for the time being with a resounding 4-0 win over Everton at Anfield.

1 – Steven Gerrard is a very important player for Liverpool and will always deliver when it most matters. The Liverpool legend always puts in a captain’s performance against the likes of Everton and Manchester United.

2 – Daniel Sturridge scored 2 goals against Everton, the second of which is surely one of the best goals of the season. The Englishman also missed a penalty but is going to be highly instrumental in where Liverpool finish.

3 – Ross Barkley is a great talent but has still got a lot to learn. The Everton midfielder was controlled by the Liverpool defence from which he will learn and surely become a better player.

4 – Everton will still provide a tough fight for the 4th place in the Premier League standings.

5 – Nothing can stop Luis Suarez from scoring. Reports suggest that the Uruguayan was pelted with coins by Everton fans during the 4-0 victory over Everton at Anfield. Even after receiving such treatment he made a huge impact for the Reds.
