Vijender Singh vs Sonny Whiting: All you need to know about the fight
Do you think Vijender Singh can win the fight?
Vijender Singh will fight his first bout as a professional boxer going up against Sonny Whiting in Manchester, United Kingdom. Vijender Singh was criticized for quitting amateur boxing to join the big leagues and go professional. The Olympic bronze medalist from India will have to fight with all his heart to shut his critics up. A win tonight will be the dream start for the Indian pugilist as he steps up to the professional boxing league.
You can watch the live stream of the match on Sony Six and Sony Liv which begins at 9:30 pm IST (5 pm BST) tonight. The match will take place at Manchester Arena, United Kingdom. Salman Khan and a number of Indian celebrities and sports stars have sent their best wishes to Vijender via Twitter.
Vijender Singh’s fight has been touted as one of the biggest boxing fights for India and we can only hope that he lives up to the hype created for the fight. Remember all the hype which spiked and nosedived just as fast during the fight between Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Manny Pacquiao? Well, that was the best work by media organizers to get the world’s attention in the recent past but despite the hype, Vijender Singh’s fight is nowhere even close to being as popular as Mayweather vs Pacquiao.
Vijender Singh has hurled a lot of verbal abuse and been reciprocated by his opponent whom he faces tonight. Vijender has told the media that he is confident and his training has been intensive for the past couple of months in preparation for the fight. His support staff is all-new so he will be approaching this new obstacle with an all-new approach.
Vijender’s opponent , Sonny Whiting is not vastly experienced with just three fights and a win record of 2-1. The 26-year-old British boxer is not a modest athlete and he has said that he will put Vijender “through hell” in his debut match. The pressure might be more on Sonny because if he wins then people won’t give him a lot of accolades considering he defeated a debutante but if he loses then there will be a lot of brickbats hurled at him for losing to a debutante.
In a statement which encourages Vijender’s fans amidst all the trash talk before the fight, he said that he will let his boxing do the talking. Vijender has been in the UK for over a month to acclimatise himself to the weather there and also train to fight by obliging all the rules and regulations of a professional boxing match. He has chosen his arena entry music to be Singh is King which should pump up the Indian fans and give a clear message to his opponent.
Vijender regales the cheer he got when he won the Olympic medal and despite not having as many Indian supporters in the crowd, he trusts his training with Lee Beard to take him all the way through the four round match. If he had to choose then we would opt for Vijender Singh winning with a knockout punch rather than going to the match official to know the score and the winner of the match. The four rounds will be of three minutes each.
