The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman are in a fix after India captain Virat Kohli expressed “strong reservations” over Anil Kumble continuing as coach.
On Saturday, the eve of India’s big clash against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final, the CAC with BCCI’s acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary, CEO Rahul Johri and General Manager (cricket) Dr MV Sridhar had a meeting with Kohli. The meeting lasted for an hour, as reported by The Telegraph.
According to the same report, a source says the relationship between Kohli and Kumble is beyond the repair stage.
“Kohli is very clear about where he stands vis-a-vis Kumble. It seems the relationship is beyond the repair stage, at least from Kohli’s side. However, the CAC will now meet Kumble and see if a patch-up is possible,” a source was quoted as saying.
It has been learnt that the CAC members are now in a dilemma and will be meeting their former team-mate today in London, to hear his part.
“Kumble’s track record as head coach is almost without a blemish. How does one remove him? On what grounds? “To what extent should the captain have a say? Also, can we have a situation where Kohli, no matter how successful and brilliant he is, gets complete charge? Big questions need to be settled,” the source also added.
Another question that is bothering the CAC is what if Kohli also has a fall-out with the new coach?
However, there is no clarity yet if Kumble would be travelling with the team to the West Indies after the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators asked him to continue as coach till the limited-overs series in the Caribbean from June 23 to July 9.
