New Delhi, April 4: Ever since Mirabai Chanu earned India the first gold medal in the Commonwealth Games Gold Coast 2018 in the women’s 48 kg weightlifting category, Indian athletes and federations started to pour in congratulatory messages for the success earned by the Manipuri. Mirabai rose over Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa won silver by lifting 166 kg (76 kg in snatch and 96 kg in clean and jerk) to earn the top podium spot.

Mirabai surpassed her own personal record. The Manipuri weightlifter lifted 86 kg in Snatch category, surpassing her personal best of 85 kg which was followed by  109 kg clean and jerk record to lift 110kg in the category.

Her total lift of 196 kg delivered India’s first gold on the first day of the Commonwealth Games 2018 in the women’s 48 kg weightlifting category. The Indian, stood to the expectations and broke her own record in all the 4 attempts with ease.

“Every lift from her broke a CWG record. Nari Shakti at its best. Super proud of #MirabaiChanu for winning the first Gold for India. #CommonwealthGames2018,” Virender Sehwag tweeted.

Earlier, weightlifter Gururaja Poojary won a silver medal in the 56 kg event. Malaysia’s Muhammad Azroy Hazalwafie Izhar Ahmad got gold with a record total of 261kg. Later in the day, Raja Muthupandi, another Indian weightlifter, will be competing in the men’s 62 kg category.
