New Delhi, April 2: India cricketers and a part of the 2011 World Cup winning squad Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Raina took to social media as they re-called their memories with the marquee ICC tournament.
“Moment of a lifetime, this day 7 years ago, a billion people erupted in joy. What a night! What were you doing that night?” Sehwag tweeted
Harbhajan wrote: “World Cup champions 2011..Best day of my life..thank you everyone for ur love and support.. grateful”
While, Raina said: “7 years ago, 15 Indians and a South African did it for a Billion people.”
On April 2, 2011, Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led India edged past Sri Lanka to lift its second ICC Cricket World Cup at the batting legend Sachin Tendulkar’s home turf – the Wankhede Stadium.
It was also the first World Cup victory for Tendulkar, which he achieved in his sixth attempt.
During the chase, it was Dhoni who hit a magnificent six to chase down the target in style off a Nuwan Kulasekara delivery.
“And Dhoni finishes off in style. India lift the World Cup after 28 years”, commentator Ravi Shastri said as the captain led India to the World Cup after Kapil Dev did it on the maiden occasion in the year 1983.
However, India initially struggled in the chase after being reduced to 31 for two before opener Gautam Gambhir top-scored with 97 run and shared a crucial fourth-wicket stand with Dhoni who stayed unbeaten on 91 to take away the match from the islanders.
Earlier, Sri Lanka powered by a century from their top order batsman Mahela Jayawardene posted a challenging total of 274/6.
