Twenty-six-year old Andrea Petkovic claimed WTA Family Cirlce Cup 2014, her third title of the career after a gap of three years since her last win at Internationaux de Strasbourg on the clay court in France. The German player pulled off an incredible match to register a straight sets victory over Jana Cepelova in 7-5, 6-2.
Slovakian Cepelova, playing her maiden WTA finals found a tough and gritty opponent in experienced Petkovic. The 14th seeded Petkovic found some resistance from the 20-year old Cepelova in the first set, but was brushed aside with an ease. Fighting injuries that ranged from knee, back and ankle, Andrea Petkovic has definitely kick started the pre season of clay match tournament on a bright note. Currently ranked at world number 40, Petkovic played brilliantly throughout the tournament in South Carolina. She defeated the likes of Czech player Lucie Safarova and young rising star Eugenie Bouchard of Canada on her way to winning the finals.
The Bosnian-born Andrea Petkovic, ranked as high as 9th in the world rankings, has reached the quarterfinals of Australian Open, French Open and US Open in 2011, is back to winning ways. Her progress hit a brake after she suffered major injuries in 2012, slowing her down.
