English Vinglish director Gauri Shinde’s ad for Havells Coffee Maker: Debunk traditional gender roles

Indian families swear by their traditional and old fashioned views when it comes to a good old matrimonial alliance. Arranged marriages are seen as a phenomenal milestone that has the right to put to shame the morality of a love marriage.

Also, the regressive patriarchal practice of listing expectations only from a girl in a marriage seems outdated, yet still continues.

This video shows an ad directed by Gauri Shinde, the director of award-winning film English Vinglish starring Sridevi.

It is a coffee maker ad spot for Havells, but it is more than just the product’s portrayal in the commercial. This wonderful ad film by Shinde breaks the stereotypical depiction of the girl as a perfect homemaker – especially when her marriage is being fixed. It breaks the propagation of regressive gender roles for women.
