J&K Assembly: Ruckus over beef ban continues (Watch video)

On October 6, the ruckus in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly continued for the second day over the issue of beef ban and also floods in the state. Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) of the National Conference (NC) and the Indian National Congress (INC) stormed the well in the Assembly, climbed tables and fought with marshals, reportedly leaving security personnel injured.

As regards the beef ban, NC leader Omar Abdullah questioned why the PDP (Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition government in J&K had approached the Supreme Court when the legislature is “free” to scrap the 1932 provision in the Ranbir Penal Code prohibiting cow slaughter.

The protests by the Opposition began in the Legislative Assembly on October 5 and continued today. The protests reportedly occurred because the chair in the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council did not allow motions moved by the NC seeking suspension of the Question Hour over beef ban.

The Congress wanted a discussion on the Kashmir floods, the rehabilitation of flood victims and imposition of service tax on helicopter services for Vaishnodevi pilgrims. The encounter in Handwara where three army men were killed was also discussed.

On October 5, both houses had to be adjourned. Watch this video to know about the hungama in the J&K Assembly.
