Maria Sharapova did what she does the best , she drew on her fighting spirit once again to beat Simona Halep in a dramatic final and win her second French Open title.She came through 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 in three hours and two minutes at Roland Garros. It was the fourth match in a row that Sharapova had required three sets for victory.

Sharapova has now won five Grand Slam titles, taking her to joint-11th on the all-time list alongside Martina Hingis.

She said, “This is the toughest Grand Slam final I’ve ever played. All respect to Simona. I thought she played an unbelievable match today”.

“I can’t believe it. I never thought seven eight years ago I would win more Roland Garroses when I was 27 than any other Grand Slam. To think that I won it two times I am so emotional I can’t even talk”, she added.

She was handed her second Roland Garros title by former tennis champion Chris Evert. Maria Sharapova has earlier won Wimbledon 2004, the 2006 US Open, the 2008 Australian Open and her first French Open title two years ago in 2012.
