Revisiting India: The scenes inside Parliament when Lal Bahadur Shastri became India’s PM in 1964

Since the Bharatiya Janta Party swept the Lok Sabha Elections 2014, triumphing everyone, we have not stopped surfing the videos of Narendra Modi. And and no matter how much we do, we can’t seem to get enough of these videos.

Don’t you crave for some more classic Indian parliamentary video footage? This video shows what happened when Lal Bahadur Shastri became the prime minister of India in 1964. Lal Bahadur Shastri was the second prime minister of the Republic of India. He became a heroic figure following the victory of India in the Indo-Pakistan War in 1965. He is known for his popular slogan that goes “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan”.

In his first broadcast after being elected as PM, he had stated, “There comes a time in the life of every nation when it stands at the cross-roads of history and must choose which way to go. But for us there need be no difficulty or hesitation, no looking to right or left. Our way is straight and clear—the building up of a socialist democracy at home with freedom and prosperity for all, and the maintenance of world peace and friendship with all nations.”
