It’s the sultry Bong Babe’s 40th birthday and we wish Sushmita Sen a very, very happy birthday. she stole ou hearts in 1994 when at the tender age of 19, she won the Miss Universe pageant. She was one of the most unexpected winners during the Miss India contest as all hopes were pinned on the then acclaimed model known for her stunning good looks, Aishwarya Rai. However, when Aishwarya Rai goofed up the Q&A round and gave one of the silliest answers ever uttered on beauty pageants, Sushmita with her poise, confidence and knowledge walked away with the crown while Aishwarya came in the second place.

Even during the Miss Universe competition, she exuded confidence and was at her ease throughout. She did not stumble through but answered all questions posed to her confidently. She scored over 9 points in every round making her one of the top contenders. She even answers the challenging questions posed to her by the host who asked her what she meant when she said India was a nation of love. Her answers, which promoted unity amongst all was beautiful. Also, on being asked how could she be a private person when she was suh a public figure, her confident answer earned her huge applause.

Sushmita Sen has never been one of the high and mighty and always comes across as humble yet regal and it were these qualities that shone through during her entire duration in the pageant. On being asked if she had the time and the money to embark on an adventure, her answer was completely unexpected and completely pleasing. Her statement that she did not think only downtrodden children were special but every child was and deserved love once again made her the favourite. Her answer to the questions what she thinks is the essence of a woman did not spark any feminist debates, but quietly secured the place women have in the world.
