A major landslide struck a village in western India following heavy monsoon rains on Wednesday, July 30, killing at least 10 people and leaving up to 200 feared trapped, an official said. Emergency forces rushed to remote Malin village in Ambegaon near Pune district of Maharashtra state, where debris from a hill collapsed onto homes in the morning while residents were sleeping.

“Ten dead bodies have been recovered so far,” said Tripti Parule, a spokeswoman for the National Disaster Management Authority, in an email to AFP. “Two persons alive have been rescued. According to the district officials 150-200 (are) feared trapped,” she said.

Television footage showed a chunk of hillside dramatically giving way and a cascade of mud, rocks and trees, sparking clouds of dust.
