Does a new Call of Duty game every year get boring?Overkill?
Like the Need for Speed franchise, a new installment of the Call of Duty series has been popping up every year since 2007, while the games are indeed fun to pay, do you think Infinity Ward is overdoing it a bit? Granted that Modern Warfare 2 opened to maniacal numbers and solid scores, it was by far the most successful entertainment launch of all time, beating the likes of even Halo 3 and the Hollywood film 'The Dark Knight' which is still the biggest opener of all time. On the first day or release, Modern Warfare 2 sold an estimated 5 million copies in the US and the UK alone, and a total of 7 million copies worldwide. That amounted to a a tally of $500 million, the total production budget of the most expensive movie of all time, James cameron's 'Avatar'. But how long can Activision continue this trend? Surely a new game in November 2010 cannot possibly open to the number of Modern Warfare 2! It was confirmed that developers Treyarch are busy developing a follow up to their game 'Call of Duty: World at War', and the new game will release same time next year, and is set in World War 2. While the original 'World at war' was a success, it was a far cry from the raging triumph of Modern Wafare which had released a year ago. World at War played exactly like Modern Warfare, there just seemed to be a change in the artwork. Repetition between games is suicide for a franchise, and the same formula will not work in the future, considering gamers have become more sophisticated in recent years. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was mindblowing, but we cannot help think its sequel is a cash grab. Of course we understand that no one makes games (or for that matter any entertainment product) to get critical acclaim, its all about the money, and its fair too. But Infinity Ward/Treyarch should be wary of what happened to the Need for Speed series. Lets face it, all of the NFS games between Most Wanted and Shift were trash; Playing Carbon, Pro Street and Undercover was like watching cheesy B-movies. And more importantly, it did not help that more entertaining and polished games like 'Grid' arrived. Likewise, the Call of Duty franchise will surely take a hit one day as new game arrives. So you say military games are already crowded and no one wants anything new? Well it was the same case with racing games, and look at what Grid and DiRT did. 'World at War' felt more or less like 'Call of Duty 3', and all that Treyarch do is add a few more additions to the system developed by Infinity Ward. Unless the next installment is outstandingly different, the COD game in November 2010 will bomb. After all, COD is the IP that redefined gaming, its all about the anticipation, no one wants to go 'Meh, this one sucks lets wait for next year's game'. November 15, 2009
