Samsung, which has been rated one of the “most reliable” brands in India, despite the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 fiasco has not backed down on launches and has been launching smartphones and gadgets in quick succession. Samsung launched their Samsung Gear S3 series smartwatches in India which are high on style as well as function. The Samsung Gear S3 Smartwatch S is the second launch in the country after Samsung launched their Samsung Galaxy J1 4G, entry-level 4G smartphone in the country. The Samsung Gear S3 series smartwatches are priced in the higher segment and are not for the budget smartwatch buyers, Samsung has launched 2 smartwatches under their Samsung Gear S3 series in the country: Samsung Gear S3 Classic and Samsung Gear S3 Frontier. Both the smartwatches were launched in 2016 but have come to Indian shores much later.
Samsung Gear S3 Classic and Samsung Gear S3 Frontier, unlike traditional smartwatches that run on Android are instead Samsung’s inhouse Tizen watches. They run on Tizen OS. Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is the more advanced and also the more rugged smartwatch whereas the Samsung Gear S3 Classic is for the style and class lovers. However, both, the Samsung Gear S3 Classic and Samsung Gear S3 Frontier are bulky and are clearly targeted at men with their looks and design. In terms of looks, they look like the average, standard watch instead of the typical smartwatch with a analog display. However, both the Samsung Gear S3 Classic and Samsung Gear S3 Frontier support all smartwatch features and come with a touch display. Samsung Gear S3 Frontier can be connected to smartphones directly over 4G networks while Samsung Gear S3 Classic is a Bluetooth-enabled smartwatch. The 4G connectivity makes Samsung Gear S3 Frontier one of the most advanced smartwatches wherein it can make calls and connect to the internet directly over 4G without relying on a smartphone network.
Samsung Gear S3 Frontier comes with a MIL-STD-810G rating. Both the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier and Samsung Gear S3 Classic come encased in a 316L grade steel, which is the metal used in the making on most watches. Both the Samsung Gear S3 smartwatches are IPS68 certified making them water and dust resistant. The smartwatches come with similar features and specifications and except for a few tweaks here and there, there are not too many variations between the two. Samsung Gear S3 Frontier and Samsung Gear S3 Classic both come with a 1.3-inches always-on Super AMOLED display. The resolution is 360 x 360 pixels. Both the smartwatches are protected by a Gorilla Glass SR+. The one feature touted by Samsung is the rotating bezel in both the smartwatches which allows users to answer or reject calls and perform certain other functions with just a twist of the bezel- without having to touch the display.
Under the hood of both the smartwatches runs a 1GHz dual core processor. Samsung Gear S3 Frontier and Samsung Gear S3 Classic are compatible with all Android smartphones running Android 4.4 and having a minimum RAM of 1.5 GB. They are also iPhone compatible through the very recently launched Samsung Gear S app for iOS devices and can run on iPhone models 5 and above. Samsung Gear S app is also compliant with Samsung Gear 2 series smartwatches. Additionally, in terms of connectivity, both the smartwatches support Samsung Pay or MST and also GPS. Additionally, they support NFC, WiFi and Bluetooth. Both, the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier and Samsung Gear S3 Classic come with a heart rate monitor. There are also other sensors that the watches boast off like – sleep mode, ambient light sensor, speedometer, barometer, accelerometer, etc. Both the smartwatches are powered by a 380 mAh battery. Additionally, Samsung Gear S3 Frontier and Samsung Gear S3 Classic come with a SOS button which can be used to alert friends and family in case of emergencies.
