Manish Sisodia is an Indian politician and the current deputy Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Delhi and he is handling this post since February 2015. He is a member as well as one of the founders of Aam Aadmi Party that was launched in the year 2012. He is a former journalist and also an RTI activist. In 2013, Sisodia was a cabinet minister in the Delhi Government during the 49 day government of Aam Aadmi Party in the year 2013 and held portfolios of education and Public Works Department. He was also the member of the India Against Corruption movement (IAC) that demanded the enactment of the Jan Lokpal Bill in 2011 that further led to the anti corruption movement in the country. Born on 5th January 1972 in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, Manish Sisodia belongs to a Rajput family. His father late Dharampal Singh was a teacher. Sisodia is an award winning documentary filmmaker and he completed his post graduation (diploma) in Journalism from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in New Delhi and then he worked as a news producer as well as news reader from 1997 to 2005 for ZEE News. He has also worked as a radio anchor with FM channels in the past. He quit his journalism career in 2005 and launched his own non-governmental organization titled Kabir to campaign for RTI in Delhi's Pandav Nagar. He then also got in contact with another NGO named Parivartan founded by Arvind Kejriwal. He met Arvind Kejriwal and both of them in 2006 were selected for drafting the Right to Information Act of 2005. He then along with Arvind Kejriwal and Abhinandan Sekhri coordinated many successful RTI campaigns throughout the country and they founded the Public Cause Research Foundation with the aim of educating the Indian citizens about the different Indian laws like RTI and creating awareness among the masses. He edited a monthly magazine 'Apna Panna' and also produced several short films, workshops and documentaries for generating awareness of the RTI Act. He then along with Anna Hazare, Kiran Bedi, Arvind Kejriwal, Prashant Bhushan and others drafted the first version of the Jan Lokpal bill and he was also one of the founders of the Jan Lokpal Movement. Manish Sisodia during the anti corruption movement became one of the prime faces of the movement and was also jailed during the same. He however, continued to support the movement and became a member of the Political Affairs Committee after the formation of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2012. The party contested the 2013 legislative assembly elections and Sisodia contested the election from the Patparganj constituency on the AAP ticket. He became the member of legislative assembly after emerging victorious in the election. He defeated Nakul Bhardwaj of BJP with a margin of 11,478 votes to be elected in the assembly. His party along with the external support of Indian National Congress were successful in forming the government and after the formation, Sisodia was handed the portfolios of education, public work department, urban development, local bodies, land and building department. However, the Delhi government remained in power only for 49 days and Manish Sisodia along with Arvind Kejriwal and other party members resigned from the post on 14th February 2014. The assembly elections were again held in 2015. In this election AAP swept the polls by winning 67 out o the 70 constituencies and created a record of the largest win in the Delhi legislative elections history. In the election, Manish Sisodia contested from the same constituency of Patparganj and he won against BJPs candidate Vinod Kumar Binny with a margin of 28,641 votes. He along with Arvind Kejriwal and four others took the oath and were sworn in as ministers on 14th February 2015. Arvind Kejriwal became the Chief Minister of Delhi whereas Manish Sisodia was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi. Apart from being the deputy chief minister, he was given the charge of various other portfolios like Finance and Planning, Revenue, Services, Power, Education, Higher Education, Information Technology, Technical Education and Administrative Reforms in the Delhi government. Sisodia has been an important member of the AAP and is considered to be at number two in the party after Arvind Kejriwal. He was also included in the 2016 Indian Express list of 100 most influential Indians.
