Baba Ramdev is an Indian, Hindu Swami and is particularly well known for his efforts to popularize yoga. He is a yoga teacher as well is known for his work in Ayurveda, politics and agriculture. He is also the founder of Patanjali Group of institutions. He is also one of the founders of Divya Yoga Mandir Trust that aims at promoting Yoga among masses.Born in 1965 in Alipur village of Mahendragarh district of Haryana, Ramdevs real name is Ramkishen Yadav. He was born to Ram Niwas Yadav and Gulabo Devi. He studied up to eighth grade in a school in Shahjadpur and he then joined Arya Gurukul in Khanpur where he studied Sanskrit, Yoga and Indian Sculptures. While completing his education, he read a book called Yogik Sadhan written by Aurobindo Ghosh and was deeply influenced by it. He then decided to be a Sanyasi and he was initiated into the ascetic order by Swami Shankardevji Maharaj and he adopted the name Baba Ramdev after becoming a Sanyasi.he then went to Kalva Gurukul in Jind district where he received his Acharya (post graduate) degree with specialization in Sanskrit Vyakrana, Yoga Darsan, Vedas and Upanishads. He also offered free yoga to villagers across Haryana for some time and then moved to Haridwar in Uttarakhand where he practiced intense self discipline and meditation and spent several years studying at Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya. In 1995, Baba Ramdev founded Divya Yog Mandir Trust in order to promote Yoga and he was accompanied by Acharya Karamveer, an expert in yoa and Vedas and Acharya Balkrishna, a physician with a degree in Ayurveda. The headquarters of the trust is at the Kripalu Bagh Ashram of Haridwar and Baba Ramdev mainly teaches Yoga in this Ashram. Baba Ramdev is popular for his Pranayam form of Yoga and he focuses more on breathing exercises and places more importance on Asanas. He gained popularity and a huge following in 2003 after Aastha TV began to feature him in their morning yoga slot. A large number of celebrities started to attend his camps and he taught yoga to many actor including Amitabh Bachchan and Shilpa Shetty. He addressed the Muslim clerics at their seminary in Deoband, Uttar Pradesh and he became the first non-Muslim to publicly address this seminar. He later also started to teach yoga at countries like Britain, United States of America and Japan. He then founded Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar and it has two campuses in India called Patanjali YogpeethI and Patanjali Yogpeeth-II and also has its presence in countries like UK, US, Nepal, Canada and Mauritius. Patanjali Yogpeeth was formed for the promotion and practice of yoga and Ayurveda. It also manufactured Ayureda medicines and it offers treatments for all in their residential accommodations. Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna also founded Patanjali Ayurved in 2006 and as of March 2016, the companys turnover is above Rupees 45 Billion and is cruising with a monthly rate of about Rs 5 billion to 5.5 billion.the company has impacted major Multi National Companies and the Maharashtra Government is planning to tie up with Baba Ramdev to sell off the excessive products derived from materials available in forest to Patanjali.Baba Ramdev also has been involved in politics and social service. In 2010, he announced plans to form a political party called Bharat Swabhiman but a year later, he said that he had no intention in forming a political party and also he would not directly enter in politics but would influence politics by encouraging a groundswell popular reaction. In the 2014 general elections, he voiced his support for Narendra Modi to become the next Prime Minister of India and it is alleged that he ran yoga camps during elections to gain support for Modi. He was also involved in the Jan Lokpal agitation in 2011 where he campaigned against corruption with activists like Anna Hazare, Ram Jethmalani, Kiran Bedi, Swami Agnivesh and Arvind Kejriwal. In June 2011, he launched the Bhrashtachar Mitao Satyagrah at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi and launched his campaign against black money. He declared that he would go to Anshan to pressure the government to root out corruption and repatriate the black money. He was then arrested by the police while attempting to disguise himself in womens clothing and was detained in isolation at Safdargunj Airport and then via helicopter he was detained to his Ashram and was banned to enter Delhi for 15 days. Baba Ramdev is also known for his controversial statements and in one of his statements he said that he believes that homosexuality is a mental disorder and it can be cured. He also created controversies by claiming that the conditions of the patients suffering from AIDS can be improved through yoga as well as the medicines sold by his Divya Yoga Mandir. He also received criticism for his statement that he would have beheaded those who refuse to chant Bharat Mata ki Jai if it was not in the law of the land. Baba Ramdev has won many awards and recognition for his contribution in Yoga. In 2007, he received the honorary Doctorate from the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Bhubaneshwar for his efforts to popularize the Vedic system. He was honoured with Sri Chandrashekharendra Saraswati National Eminence Award in 2011 by Governor of Maharashtra. The Government of Haryana in April 2015 appointed Baba Ramdev as the brand ambassador of Yoga and Ayurveda. He was also given the status of Cabinet Minister for Haryana but he declined it and stated that he wanted to continue serving as a Baba. In May 2016, American Business magazine Fast Company ranked Baba Ramdev 27th in the list of Most Creative Business People of 2016.
